Children's Sunday School Classroom
Children and the Holy Eucharist.
At What age should my child receive communion? Many parents ask this question as the strive to raise their children in the faith. Once a child is Baptized, regardless of age, he or she is welcome to receive the Holy Eucharist. The Book of Common Prayer (p. 858) tells us that at in Baptism an individual is a full member of the Church and welcome to receive all the Sacraments, including the Holy Eucharist.
What about First Communion Classes? We offer First Communion Classes as part of our regular Children's Christian Formation Program. Each child is taught what the Holy Eucharist is. A date in the late fall is usually set for First Communion after the children have had the instruction on the Eucharist. Ultimately it is up to the child's parents to determine if the child is prepared to received the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist.
How do I know if my child is ready for Communion? Has your child asked? Have you asked your child if he or she wants to receive the Sacrament? Does the child imitate your actions at the altar rail? Does your child watch what you do at the altar rail? Has your child reached our his or her hands to receive? These are signs that your child is ready.
